Description
73 Pontiac Grandville ConvertibleThis car is a piece of Americana. It is a big old boat. It is pure fun to drive around in with the top up or the top down. With the top down and the sun out, there is not much more to ask for from a 50 year old piece of American history. Don’t even think about spirited driving, just sit back and enjoy. The engine is huge in terms of cubic inches at 455. It puts out a paltry 215 HP, but it does it in style.
When I got this car, the first thing that I did was buy a temporary garage for it. Not one of those that is designed to last for a couple of years, but one that is designed to last for 25-30 years. The car has always been in that garage as well as covered with car covers. Except for when I would take it out for a drive. And that is the sad part and why I have decided to sell it. I have not taken it out in a couple years. I don’t think it has been driven even 1,000 miles since I have owned it and done all of the work on it.
This auction is for a 1973 Pontiac Grandville Convertible. Yes, the car is 50 years old. It is a driver and a very fun driver. Yes, it is burgundy. Inside and out, but with a white top.
The car belonged to my brother and I inherited it over 20 years ago. The car’s early life was spent in Connecticut. While owned by my brother, it was only driven in the summer. As winter closed in, it was put in a garage where it sat until spring. As you will see in the pictures, there is some rust, in a couple places, but relatively minor. Initiated via the previous owner to my brother.
The car was in San Diego at my nieces house where I picked it up and then drove it to Santa Cruz. This was in 2000. The drive up was through a combination of weather. Sun-top down. Rain-top up. Surprising, 20MPG.
I wanted to car to be as fresh as possible, so I had a new convertible top installed along with new carpets. The top works slowly, but it works. The rear window is as the car came in it’s original form. The window is made of glass. To raise and lower the top, the car needs to be on level ground or the glass will shatter.
The car has a rebuilt engine that I had done after getting it to Santa Cruz.
Also: New exhaust system, new suspension (shocks, tie rods, springs, ball joints and rear sway bar, brakes and a full service of differential and transmission. (The tranny seeps a bit.) Also new radiators, hoses and thermostat.
The Down Side: The rusty parts. The bottom of the trunk. The rust spots in the trunk are circled. These appeared to be from rain water being trapped under the trunk mat. Yes, it could use some new seals and a new mat as well as being coated with an inhibiter.
The interior is original. It is still serviceable. The AC doesn’t work, and the odometer is a little weird as well as the amp gauge.
I will miss it, but it is time to move it on to someone else that can enjoy the features that it has.
To repair the cosmetic rust areas would be minimal, as it is just the floor of the trunk and the front part of the wheel wells.
Mechanically, the car is great and little more than service will be needed to enjoy the car well into the future.
A 0 deposit will be required to the winning bidder. The reserve is set based on Hagerty values. Payment must be made in full and cleared through my bank before the car is shipped if that is the method chosen.
I strongly urge a buyer to view the car or have a pre purchase inspection performed.

Hi, MarkYes, cruise control and it works, power windows, power seats, and it has a cassette player and radio. Honestly don't know if they work.It has AC, but the front drive on it went out, so I pulled the belt off.It has been repainted to match the original. Interesting paint job. Not the best in the world though. It does not have fender skirts, but it may have before the car came to me.The rust is only at the front of the wheel well. No rust on the floor pan.Yes, the transmission was serviced when the engine was rebuilt. There are 2 gas tank straps that are new and a front grill piece that is new.Hi Steve, love the Grandville. I've been looking for a "big" Pontiac convertible to add to my herd.- can you list any further options (cruise control, AM/FM, power windows). Do all these options work?- does the A/C blow, but not cold, or just not work at all?- Did this car ever have fender skirts?- Is it the original paint?- I'm concerned about the rust in the wheel wells, and how far back into the body it goes. Is there any rust in the front floor pan?- has the transmission ever been serviced? Thanks very much. If you can give me a ballpark as to what you hope to get for the car, that would be helpful.Mark

I didn't do a stellar job adding that question and the answer, The question shows up in the middle of the edit and my answer to Marks question comes first. Please find his question and read it and then read my answer.

Not doing so great at editing. The power seats work as well as the power windows. No, AC doesn't work as noted. The thing that I don't know about is the radio. I never listen to a radio in any of my cars. If the radio and the player work, great. Consider that they do not, and I will add that my brother was a music freak and always had music on. I like the peace more than the sound.
